The breeding base of Chinese national treasures

Giant Panda Base

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was established on the basis of raising, treating, and breeding giant pandas at Chengdu Zoo.

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was established in 1987. Initially, there were only 6 sick, old, and disabled giant pandas. After years of effort, it has now developed into a captive population of 244 giant pandas and over 160 red pandas. In terms of scientific research, the base has overcome key technical challenges such as artificial breeding, reproduction and rearing, disease prevention and control, and population genetic management of giant pandas through innovative scientific research work, and has achieved multiple original scientific research results.
